A Week Of New Recipes

Last week I decided that we are in a bit of a food rut and it was time to try some new recipes! We spent a cosy morning in bed with tea and a selection of biscuits and got to work searching through an array of different cook books to seek out some new tasty for the coming week!

While doing this we found plenty of old recipes that we had forgotten along with a handful of recipes that we had earmarked to try and seemingly forgotten about once the book was popped back onto my bookshelf to not be touched again for months (more like years!!)

So without further ado, here are this week's choices!

Monday – Max's Sandwich Book, Ham, Egg ‘n’ Chips (page 26)

This cookbook is fantastic and we definitely don't reach for it enough!! We were thoroughly spoilt for choice as to which recipe we should choose but ultimately settled on this particular one as a group favorite!

I am ever so slightly lazy and not making my own Ham Hock and Focaccia (recipes for those are provided) but the homemade shoestring fries are an absolute must! We left it a bit too late to soak the chips in ice water but they still turned out fantastic!

The Malt Vinegar Mayo is insanely good and compliments the sandwich perfectly along with the tangy piccalilli which none of my family actually had on theirs except for me (they were missing out!)

This recipe was the perfect start to the week, highly recommended, 2 big thumbs up!!

Tuesday – The Dairy Diary Quick After Work Cook Book, Smokey Chorizo Kedgeree (Page 79)

This recipe was chosen by Sofia and it's the first recipe that we all agreed on together. None of us have ever actually eaten kedgeree before so we are all looking forward to trying this! I’m sure that this recipe is entirely traditional however we all liked the sound of it regardless!

The recipe says it serves 4 however I decided to follow the recipes ‘Cooks Tips’ and added poached eggs and salmon fillets to the dish to stretch it a little further and it was the perfect amount to fill our particularly large tummies! I managed to cook it in the suggested 25 mins too which definitely makes it a perfectly quick after work recipe.

Now on to the taste!

We needed to add a lot of salt to this however after that extra bit of seasoning it was really delicious! Sofia ate it in silence which is always a good sign and managed to eat an extremely large portion so I was very pleased. Another recipe I highly recommend!

Wednesday – Ginos Hidden Italy, Piedmontese Bean & Lentil Soup (Page 35)

This recipe was chosen by my husband which is quite a shock as he is a massive gym loving carnivore however, I was eager to give it a go. I'm doing my best this week to cook the recipes exactly as they are written in the book, however I did have some delicious homemade chicken stock in the freezer which I decided to use in place of vegetable stock.

If I am truly honest, this was not my favourite recipe this week! My family however LOVED it! Sofia was particularly highly complementary about it and I can complain as it was a very healthy and nutritious dinner for us all.

Thursday – Pie, Cornmeal Crust Chilli Pie (Page 77)

I loved this idea and I really love this cook book!

The chilli recipe itself was perfectly fine and we all ate and enjoyed it however we just aren't fans of a basic minced meat chilli. After eating this we were excited to try it again using my own chilli recipe, keeping the crust on top as it was scrummy and

adding a really nice and tangy guacamole on the side.

Watch this space as I will definitely be trying it out again very soon!!

Friday – Happy Days With The Naked Chef, Spaghetti with Salami, Fennel & Tomatoes (Page 122)

I chose this recipe partly to use up the rest of the salami earlier in the week but also because I don't think I have ever eaten fennel before! I was a bit nervous that no one would like it but the taste was actually really mild and honestly, I think the salami overpowered it quite a bit!

Still, the recipe was really delicious, easy to prepare and gave me the opportunity to top up my pangritata supply in the freezer for a rainy day.

I’m not here to argue with Jamie Oliver but I do feel like this dish was missing a little something, I feel like possibly a touch of lemon zest in the pangritata whereas my family smothered theirs in cheese haha.

Thank you so much for taking the time to read off this, you are very kind! Do let me know if you try out any of these recipes, I would love to know your thoughts! xx
